Easter holidays

Hec and sheep
Freezing my ass off watching Wick Academy overcome Forres Mechanics 3-2 in a rain and wind lashed Highland League fixture, it occurred that two fantastic goals scored by Gary 'Chucky' Weir ('a raw never say die talent from Lybster with a keen eye for goal') will only be remembered by the few hundred souls standing shivering on the sidelines. No TV cameras. The goals will probably get better with every telling too, like folklore that is embellished down the years. Great half-time pies and coffee at half-time. Admission arguably the best £6 I spent all week...

So...you're under pressure to deliver a fun holiday experience for your kids but money's short. How does a night in a castle   - very possiby haunted - for £17 (around £11 for kids) grab you? Now that's what I'm talking about! Get the full scoop shortly in Ross-shire's finest weekly newspaper. I'll also be telling you about the 'home from home' we sampled in the very heart of our capital city - a stone's throw from two starkly contrasting Edinburgh attractions...

A massive raspberry though to Murrayfield Ice Centre for turning away a despairing adult (me) in charge of two bursting-for-the-toilet children (aged five and two). The visage of the woman on reception  was colder than a lump of wintry granite, doing little to dispel Edinburgh's stereotypical 'you'll have had your tea' reputation. Shame on you!
